Geography at The Links
Curriculum Intent
The curriculum at The Links Primary has been designed to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and, natural and human environments, together with deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive through their time at primary school and also into their further education and beyond. Which encourages children to learn geography that is contextual to their locality in the world. Outdoor learning is an integral part of our geography curriculum, where skills are taught and experienced. It is important for children to experience geography in its physical form, looking at the environment around, experiencing places that have geographical relevance.
Curriculum Implement
The geography curriculum at The Links Primary has been constructed using our ‘Progression of Knowledge and Skills’ document. This outlines the key knowledge and skills that each year group has to cover. The curriculum begins at EYFS where the children are encouraged to learn about their local area and the natural world around them. Then, in Key Stage 1 there is a focus on learning about our world beginning with our local area, which the children will be familiar with and then building on their location knowledge by extending their geographical area awareness, looking at our country and the rest of the world, then moving onto some familiar geographical features such as rivers. In Key stage two they move onto more complex geographical concepts and look more in depth at the survival and workings of our world. Children are encouraged to learn through enquiry and geographical fieldwork, encouraging the learning to take place outdoors and through practical study as much as possible.
Curriculum Impact
Ultimately, with the delivery of the The Links Primary Geography curriculum, use of relevant and accurate resources and exciting learning opportunities, that we offer, pupils should receive an enriched learning experience, where they know more and remember more. The result should be that the children will enjoy and be excited by their Geography lessons and become keen and knowledgeable Geographers with a secure understanding of our world and the key physical and human processes.
