History at The Links
Intent:
History at The Links Primary is well planned and well sequenced. It holds a whole-school approach focused on enquiry and chronological understanding for all pupils where they are able to investigate, consider and reflect. This results in pupils celebrating and seeing the importance of History. Sequenced from the Development Matters framework and the National Curriculum, pupils take a journey through a range of periods of time to gain an understanding of ‘Past and Present’. We ensure breadth and ambition for every individual through teaching of key components leading to end points in a variety of ways, tailored to ensure engagement for all. Pupils learn through building on their core knowledge as they go through the school.
Implement:
The History curriculum at The Links Primary is made up of components of core knowledge through the use of our ‘Progression of Knowledge’ document. The sequence of the curriculum very much focuses on knowledge of chronology. There is a focus on understanding of the terms ‘Past and Present’ from EYFS to Key Stage 1. As the children move to Key Stage 2, all topics are based on the National Curriculum and are sequenced starting from the Stone Age in Year 3 to ancient civilisations in Year 6. There are threads that run throughout the curriculum and are revisited in different year groups allowing children to build on their prior knowledge. Children are encouraged to learn historical knowledge through the use of enquiry-based learning with key questioning and through a range of teaching and learning styles. Cross-curricular links are made through a range of subjects making History evident everywhere around school. We ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn about local and national studies.
Impact:
Ultimately, through The Links Primary History curriculum and the vast range of experience, resources and learning opportunities we offer, pupils will be able to know more and remember more. Our hope is for children to not only become keen historians but also respectful citizens of their community with an understanding of key events that have shaped our past, impacted our present and will influence our future.
